Mama voice, a new magazine in South Kivu

"Mama Voice" is the name of the new magazine just published in Bukavu. Mama voice is the work of the Association of Media Women of South Kivu, AFEM SK.Its official release took place this Friday, Feb. 3. This first issue includes 12 articles that talk about gender-based violence and eight others on women's participation in the electoral process.

For the first issue, this magazine is about women who continue to be victims of discrimination related to a lot of backward customs. This created an imbalance in gender relations within communities. Women are sidelined and power is concentrated in the hands of men. Women's access to land as a resource base is compromised by customs because women are denied their right to be heir and to own land. Community management is also seen as the preserve of men alone. While women are producing and nurturing families, they have no decision on resources that belong to men. These customs and practices that are  maintained by men determine the weak position of women in different sectors of life.

While communities are massacred, looted and burned, women are facing another dramatic dimension of war: sexual violence with atrocities beyond comprehension.These articles, listed on 24 pages recount the unfortunate realities of violence experienced by women of south kivu province. This is among other things: A family man who violates his three daughters from the age of 14, mothers prostitute themselves to survive and support their children, women lose their jobs due to maternity, etc..This magazine also asks questions on; media outlets serving politicians?, Women will they ask their applications to the Provincial elections?, And again the conviction of the community of Kabare, only territory that has understood the relevance of participation of women in politics, etc..
It is well produced as part of the mission and overall objective ofAssociation of Media Women of South Kivu AFEM SK, which is "to work towards the promotion of Congolese women in the media available." For active participation to better train and inform its readers, although AFEM SK would like that "Mama Voice" is monthly; hoping positive change for a better Congo where the rights and duties of each other are respected.This magazine was produced in partnership with Norvegian Church Aid, NCA. It is available in the reading room of AFEM SK and in all media houses partner.

L’Association des Femmes des Médias du Sud Kivu (AFEM-SK) est une organisation à but non lucratif (OBNL) créée en vertu de la loi congolaise du 10 Août 2003. Les membres d’AFEM-SK sont composés de femmes actives dans les médias du Sud-Kivu et les maisons de presse. AFEM-SK est spécialisée dans la production des émissions radio en milieu rurale comme en milieu urbain avec un accent particulier sur les femmes soit à partir de radio-clubs ou dans la position de l'activiste social local. - Campaign "Challenging the silence: the media against sexual violence" from March 2006 to date with the support of LOLA MORA (radio shows, workshops, advocacy before the International Criminal Court in The Hague)

- "Producing radio within 16 days of activism to fight against sexual violence" with the support of the organization TROCAIRE in December 2007.

- "Awareness of rural women on issues of local elections in the DRC", with the support of the PPI in July 2007

- "Exchange of experience of women in the media in Rwanda and DR Congo" with the support of LOLA MORA organization, 2007.

- "Awareness of rural women in the democratization process in RD.Congo" with the support of the PPI in July 2006 to June 2007
- Institutional support by the Institut Panos Paris from 2006 to 2007
